Disembarked for service 19th May 1915 with the 20th Hussars as Private 20497, he was discharged to a commission with the Leicester Regiment on 31st July 1917.

He was born in Derby 14th Apr 1897 and baptised 27th June 1897. He was the son of William and Mary “Ellen” Edey and they lived at 103 Stepping Lane, Derby. William was a fur skin sorter in 1901 and a light leather dresser in 1911. Sydney had an older and younger brother. He also had a sibling that had died by 1911 census. His parents and his older brother were born in London. In 1911 census: He was at school age 13 and living at 99 Stepping Lane, Derby. He attended Derby Central School, Hastings St, Derby. He is commemorated on their school memorial plaque. In 1901 census; He was age 3 and living at 37 Stanley Street, Derby:
He is also commemorated on memorials in Victoria Street Congregational (now URC) Church and St John’s Church, Bridge St/Mill Street, Derby. Probate of his will was granted to his father 24th Jan 1919. The amount was £125 12s 3d. In 2014, the relative value of £125 12s 6d from 1918 ranges from £5,466.00 to £44,220.00. After his death his parents were living at Allcotts, Pleadon, Newent, Glos.
(He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant 31 7 1917. At Victoria St Church in addition to the memorial there was a book made by Bemrose with details of all 17 men that died. His older brother was a clerk at a boot factors (probably where father worked as a light leather dresser. His father was a poultry farmer (incapacitated) in 1939 register in Newent.)
